Sports provision
at Alconbury Weald

Alconbury Weald has been designed using ‘Active Design’ principles to encourage active leisure, exercise or just to get to where they need to go. Part of this is access to sports provision, with early delivery of facilities including The Gym, The Pavilion, cricket pitch, Swynford Park MUGA, Garland Park table tennis and netball courts at Ermine Street Church Academy.

As Alconbury Weald grows, additional sports provision will include:

  • Indoor courts and sports activities in the refurbished hangars in Heritage Park
  • Outdoor pitches in Prestley country park
  • The secondary school sports facilities will include a hockey pitch – with community access out of school hours subject to an agreement with the school.
  • And the main Sports Hub – which is the topic of this consultation

Alconbury Weald
Sports Hub

Alconbury Weald Sports Hub will provide high-quality, inclusive sports facilities that promote health, wellbeing and community engagement.

At its heart, the Hub will provide the main outdoor pitches for the development, with a focus on grass football pitches for people of all ages and skills levels, as well as an artificial pitch. It will aim to foster participation in team and individual sports, support player development and community involvement in sport.

Work has been ongoing to explore whether rugby pitches would be included, as a future home for Huntingdon Rugby Club, but this has not yet been finalised.

Alongside the sports space, the Hub will include important community space both for booking events and activities and for other health and wellbeing related organisations at the heart of the growing new community of Alconbury Weald.

Clubhouse

A two-storey clubhouse is currently being investigated in collaboration with architects and this consultation will help shape its design. The building is expected to offer a range of facilities, including:

  • changing rooms – compliant with sporting body requirements
  • toilets
  • storage space
  • café
  • office area
  • bar and kitchen
  • balconies with views over the pitches

+ over 250 car parking spaces and cycle parking.

As well as sporting events, the clubhouse could also be hired by community groups for a range of activities and by residents for private functions and celebrations.

Sports pitches

Within the planning approach for Alconbury Weald the requirement for pitches is based on feedback from local clubs and sporting governing bodies, and then agreed by the local authority. This process considers current under provision in the local area, projected needs of future residents, and a review of popular trends in sporting usage.

The current proposal for football includes:

  • Two 11 v 11 football pitches
  • An 11 v 11 artificial grass pitch
  • Two 5 v 5 football pitches

Additional space is currently set aside for potential rugby uses or for other sports.

Please use the comments box at the end of this page to let us know your views on both the proposed sports pitches layout and thoughts on other uses within the Hub area.

Will the pitches have lighting?

Some of the pitches will be designed to have lighting. These will be located away from residential areas and designed to focus on specific pitch areas.

Who will deliver the Sports Hub?

Urban&Civic, in its role as master developer, will oversee the design, planning and delivery of the new Sports Hub at Alconbury Weald. It is being supported by Living Sport, a local charity focussed on improving lives and communities by helping people to be more active.

Who will run the facilities at the Sports Hub?

We are in discussion with a couple of potential operators, who will manage the pitches and clubhouse facilities. Subject to further discussions and detailed business plans, an appointment is likely to be made in late 2027/early 2028.
